When you are sick, the only place you want to be is at home – in a place of familiarity and comfort. The same can also be said for the seriously ill babies, children and young people that chYps Children’s Hospice at Home cares for.
We have always had a very clear focus: to enable children and young people with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions to receive full hospice care in their and their families’ place of choice, which is overwhelmingly their own home.
When a life-limited or life-threatened child needs care, our specialist palliative care nurses will take the hospice to the home, so the young patient can stay with their mum, dad, brothers and sisters. This prevents disruptive and lengthy admissions to hospital and enables families to be together through incredibly difficult times.
We were the UK’s first children’s full hospice at home service, and still one of only a very few acute services providing oncology and end of life care to children in the home.
We are also very proud to be Kent’s longest established children’s hospice service and the only charity providing vital end-of-life, cancer and respite care in the homes of poorly children in the county and the London Borough of Bexley.
Part of EllenorLions Hospices, we also ensure young people receive the best possible care and support when transitioning into adult services.
Our dedicated team of staff and volunteers care for the whole family, ensuring everyone is looked after throughout a child’s illness and even after they have died.
Families do not have the added worry of paying for care as everything –including nursing care, respite, counselling, bereavement support and play and music therapy - is provided free of charge at the point of service.
As a charity, not part of the NHS, we are reliant on community donations to help raise the £1.47million we need every year to be able to continue providing care locally, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
We have an on-going case load of 200 children and young people. We are a charitable organisation, a member of Together for Short Lives and registered with the Care Quality Commission.
chYps started life in 1994 as the Children & Young Peoples’ Service of EllenorLions Hospices in North West Kent ( Dartford, Gravesend, Swanley). It then grew to include the London Borough of Bexley. In 2010 our services expanded into West Kent (including (Maidstone, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells). In this area we are focusing on providing 24 hour palliative and end of life care to those children and young people in most urgent need, but are raising funds to progressively phase in our full service.
